✦ Synopsis
Before and after the administration of insulin the serum levels of glucose, growth hormone, and ll-hydroxy-corticosteroids were determined in 11 hypopituitary dwarfs and 12 dwarfed children without growth hormone deficiency. The results were examined as to the cause of the frequent finding of persistent hypoglycaemia in patients with impaired secretion of growth hormone. Primary adrenal insufficiency had been previously excluded by the ACTH-test.
The combined deficiency of STH and ACTH seems to induce persistent hypoglycaemia; but this is not regularly so. An isolated deficiency of STH may, but does not need to be correlated with persistent hypoglycaemia. There may be persistent hypoglycaemia in dwarfed children without STH-deficiency and with a normal increase of plasma steroids ~fter the administration of insulin.
