Known as one of the founders of the Latin American Boom, he influenced an entire generation of Spanish-speaking readers and writers in the Americas and Europe, and most of his best-known work was written in France, where he established himself in 1951. He has been called both a "modern master of the short story" and, by Carlos Fuentes, "the SimΓ³n BolΓvar of the novel."
