For many years, Home Office scientists unintentionally have been confusing the Courts by the production of certificates of blood alcohol analysis containing a deduction three times the standard deviation for the method of assay (GLC). As no action is taken on samples found to contain less than 87 mg of alcohol per 100ml of blood, I have always thought it would have been less confusing to give the mean analytical figure without this deduction.
