Abstract
We report on the measurements and calculations of bit error rate (BER) and noise figure (NF) in an up‐conversion‐pumped thulium‐doped fiber amplifier for the S band. Error‐free transmission (BER < 10^−9^) was achieved, and good agreement between measured and calculated power penalties was obtained. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
