Abstract

The dependence of intrinsic birefringence of CdS on uneasily stress has been investigated at room temperature in the spectral region 0.1 to 2.3 eV. The measurements were performed for stresses parallel and perpendicular to the c‐axis of CdS single crystals up to 2500 and 300 kp/cm^2^, respectively. The experimental results are explained by stress‐induced changes of the parameters of the high energy peak (E~1~) and exciton lines (A, B, and C).
