✦ Synopsis

Fomannosin (A) has been implicated in the phytopathogenic activity of the economically important wood rot fungus Fomes annosus which affects pine stands in the Southeastern United States. The structure of this unusual sesquiterpene was established by spectroscopic methods and by X-ray crystallographic analysis of the E-bromobenzoylurethane derivative of dihydrofomannosin.l Recently a synthetic approach to fomannosin has been described. 2 Biogenetic speculations3 have centered on a humulene precursor which might cyclize to a tricyclic compound related to illudol followed by oxidative cleavage of the appropriate bond (Scheme 1). Although biosynthetic studies have been reported for the biogene-CH3C02Na -b

## Abstract The origin of the carbon skeleton of verrucarin E **(1)** from acetate as precursor is confirmed. Incorporation studies with [1,2‐^13^C]‐acetate have demonstrated that two acetoacetate units couple together as shown in pattern **A** __(Scheme 2)__ and not as in **B**. Analysis of the de

Twelve of the twenty-five carbon atoms of streptonigrin are derived from three intact erythrose units. We reported4 that feeding [U-13 C6]-D-glucose (1) to growing cultures of Streptomyces flocculus ATCC 13257 yielded streptonigrin specifically labeled at all carbons. An analysis of the 13 13 C-C sp
