✦ Synopsis
The m a x i m u m biomass in i r o n -l i m i t e d p h o t o s y n t h e t i c batch cultures of chlorella increased as the l o g a r i t h m of the iron concentration. The growth yield f r o m iron (Yx/ve) showed a m a r k e d inverse relation to the specific growth rate. The m a x i m u m biomass yield, g dry biomass/g iron consumed, was 7 . 5 x 103 with specific growth rate 0.108 h -l ; the m i n i m u m was 0.79x 103 with specific growth rate 0.145 h -~. The m a x i m u m specific growth rate in the exponential phase of F e limited cultures varied as the initial F e concentration. F e -l i m i t e d growth m a d e the cells adhere to a glass surface.
