Silica sulfuric acid efficiently catalyzes the three-component Biginelli reaction between an aldehyde, a b-dicarbonyl compound and urea or thiourea in refluxing ethanol to afford the corresponding dihydropyrimidinones in high yields. The catalyst is reusable and can be applied several times without
