In 1979, the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) at Mayag/Jez, received a grant from the Fundaci6n Puertorrique~ de las Humanidades (the Puerto Rican branch of the National Endowment for the Humanities), to sponsor a series of symposia on medical ethics. Two years earlier, the project had been designed by Elena Lugo, Ph.D., a member of the philosophy department at UPR at Mayagfiez. These symposia were intended to serve the needs of undergraduate pre-medical students. But something else was needed as well for the students enrolled in the industrial microbiology program, newly established at that time. A bioethics course was developed that centered on research ethics, university-industry relations, and the relation of the life sciences to social issues. This course now fulfills one of the requirements for these two programs.
Eventually the University established a Center for Philosophy in its Interdisciplinary Function (CEPHIF). The Center is directed by Professor Lugo. CEPHIF endeavors to achieve its purpose by sponsoring regular academic courses, short courses, workshops, discussion sessions, colloquia, and international congresses and conferences. It has sponsored two Inter-American congresses, in which participants from 24 nations have come together to discuss the relation between technology and theoretical and practical knowledge, as well as, from a philosophical perspective, the complex interplay between technology, politics, economics, and social institutions in North, Central, and South America.
