Cover Photograph: A snake in the cytoplasm: Cytoophidia in Drosophila ovarian cells. Several recent studies reported the discovery of a novel filamentous sub‐cellular structure that was termed cytoophidium (from the Greek for “cellular snake”). The cover image shows micro‐ and macro‐cytoophidia (both labeled green) in the large‐sized germline cells of Drosophila (cell nuclei appear in magenta colour). In this issue (pages 159–164) Ji‐Long Liu gives an overview of what is currently known about these filaments and furthermore raises various critical questions that still need answering. The cytoophidium seems to be highly conserved from prokaryotes to eukaryotes and contains the enzyme cytidine 5′‐triphosphate (CTP) synthase. The exact function of these structures is of yet unknown but it might be a good means for the cell to stabilize this important enzyme in a particular state and thus to control energy metabolism in space and time.
