✦ Synopsis

Cover Photograph: Confocal microscopy image of a section of a chicken heart showing a developing coronary vessel and the surrounding myocardium. The section was immunolabeled for Tbx5 (shown in green), Pdlim7 (shown in red), and counter‐stained with DAPI to show nuclei (blue). In cells of the left ventricle, Tbx5 revealed exclusive nuclear localization as seen in the upper right corner. However, when co‐expressed with Pdlim7 in cells of a coronary vessel, Tbx5 is localized to the cytoplasm. PDZ‐LIM proteins, the family to which Pdlim7 belongs, function in skeletal and cardiac muscle organization and maintenance by stabilizing the actin cytoskeleton and regulating cell adhesion via their interactions with α‐actinin and integrins, respectively. Pdlim7 turns out also to be crucial for valve formation in the developing zebrafish heart. See the review “Nucleo‐cytoplasmic functions of the PDZ‐LIM protein family: new insights in organ development” by Krcmery, Camarata, Kulisz and Simon in this issue.
