โฆ Synopsis
In the final analysis, the field of catalytic antibodies differs from ordinary protein engineering in its ability to induce rather than modify protein binding pockets. As such, our continuing ability to merge immunology and organic chemistry to generate catalytic antibodies should only be limited by the extent to which mechanistic antigen design and programmed induction of functionalities in antibodies can be linked.
The authors wish to acknowledge the many contributions of Alfonso Tramontano, Kim Janda, and Andrew Napper, with whom the primary experiments reviewed herein were carried out. We also thank Donald Hilvert, Alan Schwabacher, Bernie Gilula, and Per Peterson for suggesting improvements to the manuscript.
