โœฆ Synopsis


The purpose of this series of investigations is to correlate the morphological, biochemical and physiological changes which may occur in organs during their prenatal development. Carried f a r enough, this approach offers the opportunity of relating cytological and chemical changes to the onset of function in a n organ; and consequently of gaining insight into the significance of specific cellular systems for cellular activities.

An earlier paper (Flexner, Flexner and Straus, '41) deals with variations in cytochrome and cytochrome oxidase activities and with cytological changes which occur during the last two-thirds of gestation in the cerebral cortex of the fetal pig. The present paper is concerned with the relationship between variations in succinic deliydrogenase activity and the cytological changes already noted. I n addition, the activity of the complete enzyme system, succinoxidase, known to involve at least succinic dehydrogenase, cytochrome c, and cytochrome oxidase (Hopkins, Lutwak-Mann and Morgan, '39 ; Stern, '39 ; 'Previous papers of this series are listed in the bibliography as follows:
