nickel were determined by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy using Zeeman background correction (Perkin-Elmer GF-AAS, model 4100ZL). The wavelength was 232.0 nm with a bandwidth of 0.2 nm. A five-step graphite furnace program was used:

(1) 110 °C ramp for 1 s, hold for 20 s; (2) 130 °C, ramp for 5 s, hold for 30 s; (3) 900 °C, ramp for 10 s, hold for 20 s; (4) 2200 °C, hold for 5 s; and (5) 2400 °C, ramp for 1 s, hold for 2 s. The detection limit for Ni in cellular samples was 5 ppb.
