โฆ Synopsis
Introdue tion
The auxin herbicide, 2,4-Dichlorophenox~-acetic acid (2,4-1>), is widely used in fishery waters for controlling obnoxious aquatic weeds. This toxicant also enters the aquatic ecosystem by run-off from agriculture fields and thus affects the survival and physiological state of hydrobionts (HUGHES and DAVIS : Kna~ancs and WI<LLETS : ALABASTER: COPE et al.; KLEKOWSKI and ZVIRGZDS). The objective of the present study was to determine the toxicity of the biocide to Cypinus curpio ( L m N . ) . Rusbora neilgherriensis (HAM.) and Lubeo bogu (HAM.), the iiiost coiniiionly occurring fishes in the stagnant and seniistagnent waters of the Udaipur region.
Material and Methods
The fishes for the experiments were collected from local sources, and they ranged from 1.01 to 3.63 g in weight. The non-formulated, technical grade 2,4-D (Sigina Chemical Go., USA. No. D-2128) was used in the experimentation by dissolving it in rectified spirit and making a stock solution of the strength of 10 g/l-J with water. The experimental concentrations were made by dilutions based on progressive bisection of intervals on logarithmic scale (AMERICAN YUELIC HEALTH ASSOCIATION) except in the case of C . curpio. The experiments were conducted by the procedures of
