✦ Synopsis
continued from back page ...ICAO sets the standard 188 member states to implement a worldwide and standard system.
More than 100 member states have so far issued 700 million MRTDs, and this number is increasing rapidly. The MRTDs are expected to be equally valid in seaports, land borders and airports.
Assad Kotaite, president of the council of ICAO commented: "I encourage all member states to cooperate fully in the implementation of this global identification framework that can significantly enhance public confidence in air travel security, encourage people to fly in greater numbers and expedite the flow of passengers through airports."
One of the first countries to adopt facial recognition will be Australia, which could introduce the technology in its passports in the second half of 2004.

Indonesian workers to get biometric ID
A project to facilitate the travel of Indonesian workers between Indonesia and Malaysia came one step closer last month as contracts were awarded for the issuance of biometric-based identity cards. Malaysia is particularly dependent on foreign workers from neighbouring countries such as Indonesia in its plantation, construction, service and manufacturing industries. The biometric security identity cards will include personal information and fingerprints, as well as a photograph of the cardholder.
Systems integrator Sumiwata has selected Animated Electronic Industries (a subsidiary of Digital Broadband Networks) to supply a biometric security recognition and identification system comprising of hardware, software and issuance of security identity cards over a 10 year period. Sumiwata itself has a 10-year contract with Yayasan Pekerja Indonesia (the Indonesian Workers Foundation -IWF).
The contract consists of two phases. The first phase, worth an estimated US$15 million, is expected to commence in the fourth quarter this year once technical specifications have been finalised with the relevant regulatory authorities in Indonesia and Malaysia. This phase will include the issuance of some 600,000 security identity cards and should be complete by the first quarter of 2005.
