✦ Synopsis

A recently described technique for determining diffusion coefficients in binary gas mixtures was improved and the diffusion of methane, ethane, propane and n-butane in nitrogen and argon studied. The experimental D,, values, most of which unpublished until1 now, were compared with theoretical values derived from classical kinetic theory (to a first approximation), and from a more advanced treatment describing the interaction between non-polar molecules in terms of a Lennard-Jones potential function.
