Microbial enantioselective hydrolysis of diethyl-3-hydroxyglutarate afforded (S)-ethyl hydrogen-3_hydroxyglutarate,

which was transformed into (R)-4-amino-3-hydroxybutyric acid and L-carnitine, via a Curtius and Hunsdiecker rearrangement, respectively.
