Abstract
We propose a bi‐level image coding method for digital printing images, using Genetic Algorithms (GAs). These images have resolutions as high as those of photographs; therefore, the coding method is required to achieve high compression ratios. Our GA‐based method can obtain higher compression ratios by optimizing the coding algorithm according to the features of the printing images. We have confirmed that our method is 10^14^ times as fast as a full search, and that the compression ratio is 9.26% better than that of conventional methods. In addition, the compression ratio is 42% higher than that of the JBIG standard. © 2001 Scripta Technica, Electron Comm Jpn Pt 3, 84(9): 1–10, 2001
