This book was written to help the widowed, and to help those who want to support the widowed. The book accomplishes this purpose admirably.

The book is based upon three sources of information. The first is the author's own experience of widowhood caused by the death of his wife, his oldest daughter, and his wife's parents in an automobile accident. The second source is structured interviews of 83 widows. The third source is a review of the literature on widowhood. The author deftly interweaves these three sources to produce a book that clearly describes the experience of widowhood and recommends the best ways of coping with widowhood. He also explains the differences between men and women in the experience of widowhood.
