Petroporphyrins showing both a free C-7 position and a C-l 3 to C-l 7 substitution pattern typical of chlorophyll c fossils were isolated from two Cretaceous Moroccan oil shales. They may arise from chlorophyll r+ or a related compound like the 7-fomtyl analog. The recent assignment of specific prec
