โฆ Synopsis
In response to concern that older people, who will constitute 23% (19.2 million) of the UK population by 2031, had become marginalised and poorly treated, the UK Government established a programme `Better Government for Older People' in 1998. Given a modest budget but directed with enthusiasm and thoughtful creativity from Wolverhampton by Martin Shreeve, the initiative has laid useful foundations for the future.
Bids were encouraged from agencies interested in becoming pilot sites demonstrating or exploring positive engagement of older people. 28 sites were chose and their activities are now described and evaluated in a series of reports emanating from Warwick University.
The production of these reports and their evaluation is looked on not as the end of a project but the end of the beginning. The main themes to emerge from analysis of the reports are: * Approaches to combat age discrimination * Approaches to engaging with older people * Improved decision making by involving older people * Meeting older people's needs * Promoting a strategic and integrated approach to a range of activities
