erty can be utilised to enhance the recovery of oil during expression in a process called Gas Assisted Mechanical Extraction (GAME). In GAME SCO 2 is added to a conventional mechanical expression process.
A laboratory hydraulic press that allows the addition of SCO 2 at pressures of up to 300 bar was built to allow the experimental validation of this principle. The press can exert mechanical pressures of up to 1000 bar on the seed material. This press was used to experimentally compare the performance of GAME to that of conventional expression at the same mechanical pressures. Different oilseeds (cocoa nibs, sesame seed and linseed) were used at different gas pressures (100, 200 and 300 bar) and mechanical pressures (300, 600, 900 bar).
It was found that the oil yields obtainable with GAME are much higher than that of conventional expression operations performed at the same mechanical pressures. In addition it was observed that even expression at room temperature appears to be possible by applying GAME. It can be concluded that GAME processes can be used to produce good quality, unadulterated oils at high yields from various oilseeds.
