✦ Synopsis
Calculation of the Prerequisites for the Design of a Closed Sea-Water System in Stable Equilibrium
The paper examines the prerequisites necessary to run a quasi-closed sea-water system in stable equilibrium. Common valid equations, which are independent of the described system and applicable to all sea-water systems, are derived and corroborated by results obtained from a filter system consisting of a back-washing prefilter with a plastic-granule filling, and a trickling filter with varied flow-rate, filter size and feeding rate. All experiments were performed over long time-periods of at least 9 months each. Analyses of the sea water confirmed that a system built up and run under the calculated conditions can easily be maintained in stable biological equilibrium without loss of animals through parasitism or sickness for a period of at least 5 years.
