«Beowulf» es el poema inglés antiguo más importante y tal vez el más significativo del período Anglo-Sajón. A pesar de ser terminado alrededor de los siglos VIII - XI de nuestra era está ambientado en la sociedad escandinava del siglo V, narrado por bardos anónimos y trasmitido de generación a generación con, obviamente, algunos cambios. Beowulf es el sobrino de Hygelac, rey de los godos. Desde joven dio grandes muestras de valor y heroísmo, como cuando luchó contra uno de los nobles de la corte de su padre, bajo el mar y durante cinco días. Un tiempo después, Beowulf se ofrece a matar a Grendel, un temible monstruo que pretende acabar con los hombres más valerosos del reino de los daneses.
