β¦ Synopsis
preceding end, so that the transits would be observed a little earlier than would otherwise have been the case. It does not appear likely, however, that a difference of more than 2 or 3 minutes in the observed time of transit of the Red Spot can have originated in this manner; so that the conclusions to be drawn respecting the changes in the motion of the spot will remain practically unaffected.
The following table contains the Greenwich mean times of transit of the middle of the Red Spot observed here during the past opposition of Jupiter. They were all made with a power of 150 on a 61/,-inch reflector. Column 3 gives the weight attributed to the observation at the time (on a scale ranging from I , very bad, to 5, perfect satisfaction), and column 4 the longitude according to System I1 of Mr. Crommelin's ephemeris in the Monthly Notices, vol. 64, P. 244.
