can generally be made quite small with the expenditure of but little time. It remains then to set the instrument so that the azimuth error shall not exceed say five or six degrees. For symmetry observe four stars not far from the zenith reversing between the pecond and third. These stars should be so selected that a north and a south star, if convenient of nearly equal zenith distances may be observed in each position of the instrument. Let T = the observed time of transit over the mean wire.
