โœฆ Synopsis

The following observations of Co!-yiu's Comet have bcen reduced since m y communication of the 27. Aug. The effect of refraction on the differential observations Sotes on double Stars. have been disregarded. The comparisons to t l c 24. Aug. inclusive have been corrected for the comot's proper motion, but no corrections have been applied for pa-2 ' 410 aiid 334. These two doublc stars have prccisely the sanie places in the C'atalogocs of Stmtve and IIa9schel. The augles and distaiiccs differ widely: Strztcc. P = 208.07 Ilprscltel 140. f. 8 . k 9 12 7) = 5."42 Mags. 7 . 8 11 . 8 Suspecting from tlic difference of the position angles, and the inagnitudc of the companions that the stars wcrc not identical, notwithstanding Ifersclrel'e subsequent statemetit to the contrary, I examined the place this suininer with the 9 . 4 in. retractor of the Dartmouth College Observatory and found the stars wore not the same. IJerscAel's pair is Wcissc 111. 515 and the place correctly giwn hy him. This star has bcen observed and its position given in P o s i t i o n e s M e d i a e for 2 410, but tlmt pair is Weisse 111. 534, which follows thc other 11') 523 and is about 4' south. fi 334 is of cowso a very easy object; but tlic companion to 2 4 1 0 corresponding to 19 mag. ill flwschsZ's scale, is it very minute star. Drrnbowski was unable to see it ill 18G5. 2 ' 3749.

This is cntcred as double only in tlie Dorpat Cat a l o g ~~~. I n 1856 the smal!cr coniponeut was found by ~! t ~c h i to be a close pair. The irieasiires of Sscdiinnd Denhmskii present unmistakable evidences of change in both angle and distance. A fcw evenings sincc I pickcd this up by chance with my (i in. refractor, and fonnd appnrentlf a very decided increase in the distance of tlic closc pair and probably in the angle. It is :I very beailtifill object and was perfectly seen.
