Abstract
Thirtyβsix healthy young men and women (age 21β35) received 0.00, 0.25, or 0.50 mg triazolam (n = 12 per group) while undergoing experimental sleep fragmentation in which sleep was disrupted by presenting tones to produce brief EEG arousals (without shortening sleep time). The following day subjects' daytime function was assessed using the Multiple Sleep Latency Test and a divided attention performance task. The fragmentation of sleep produced significant disruption of nocturnal sleep and it reduced daytime alertness. Both active drug doses, relative to placebo, reversed the experimentally produced sleep disturbance and they restored daytime alertness.
