Benzene occluded in the interlayer gaps of graphite-potassium irnercalation compounds, KC,, and KC*, was found to be dimerized to biphenyl <BP) at room temperature, and the biphenyl thus formed is accommodated in the gaps as anions (BP'and Bp-).
