## Abstract Discocytic human red cells undergo discocyte‐echinocyte and discocytestomatocyte transformations under the action of a wide variety of lipid‐soluble anionic and cationic agents respectively. These shape transformations are explained by the bilayer couple hypothesis of Sheetz and Singer
