โฆ Synopsis
A three day workshop was held at Battelle's Columbus Laboratories on April [24][25][26] 1976, to consider the methods of three-dimensional fracture analysis. This workshop was attended by virtually all of the outstanding researchers and government representatives who are presently engaged in this field, in the United States.
In addition to the presentation of individual papers by researchers and reports on government needs, the workshop participants considered establishing benchmark problems for use as standards for comparing analysis methods.
Task forces met to consider problems of three types (surface cracks in a slab, through cracks in a plate, and corner cracked holes). Other participants considered documentation standards for reporting benchmark results. The following benchmark problems were chosen:
(I) The surface crack (part-circle or semi-ellipse) in a slab; (2) The corner cracked hole; and (3) The compact specimen. Certain optional parameter ranges were agreed to for each problem.
However, for each case, one specific geometry was chosen as a mandatory benchmark.
