Indeed, Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies' R&D unit, sustains a long and distinguished history of innovations. We are pleased to begin this special issue commemorating the 75 th anniversary of Bell Labs by highlighting innovations associated with the tenures of Bell Labs' most recent past presidents-
