✦ Synopsis
Tests arc being conducted on a wide range af composite materials in order to develop data that will be useful in predicting failure behavior in structums. Initial studiis arc b&g pcrformcd on a graphite/epoxy cross-ply laminate in which tbc fiber orientation is changed in a regular fashion. The test data demonstrates poo(i~~.In~on,~appcPrstobtahiplrdtgneofrrlpttarityiathedaainthrrtitctraages in a smooth fashion as the d~spl~~~~s are changed continuously in a rqular manna, and a distinct but continuous diierenco is observed for the different o~a~~t~~ tested. A finite element stress analysis ~outinr is usai to caMa& the deformation lkld snrroundiag the notch tip in the test specimens, so that the rocsf stnsses at which fmcturt occurs could be calculated for each combination of loads.
'Ihe results will be extremely useful in the design of suuctural components. Future plans include demons~tion of the validity of the fracture fun~~ons develop4 in la~~~~ tests on sub-components, and extension of the loading system to include out-of-plane loading.
