The influence of GSSG on the activities of all glycolytic enzymes as well as on the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase and glutathione reduetase was studied in hemolysates of red cells from newborns and adults.

Of the enzymes studied hexokinase, 6-phosphofructokinase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphoglueonate dehydrogenase are inhibited by GSSG considerably.

Glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase is less inhibited in hemolysates from red ceils of newborns than in those of adults. All other enzymes show no differences.

The inhibition of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase can be prevented to a large extent by NADP and that of phosphofructokinase by fruetose-6-phosphate.

Elevated activity of glutathione reduetase in hemolysates produced by the addition of purified enzyme increases the inhibitory action of GSSG.

The content of GSSG is negligible in the red cells of newborns and adults whereas red cells of newborns contain nearly twice the amount of GSH than red cells of adults.
