✦ Synopsis
Numerical and analytical solutions of the evolving beam shape, beam curvature and optical phase shift are obtained from a variational analysis of the paraxial wave equation, describing nonlinear optical beam propagation in thick media. Arbitrary pre-focusing is included in the description. The properties of the solutions demonstrate that, the coupled ordinary differential equations arising in the analysis may be simplified for small-to medium-sized nonlinearities. It is also shown that, the aberrationless approach is invalid if nonlinear absorption is significant.
