✦ Synopsis

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR bcl-2 EXPRESSION IN SYNOVIAL SARCOMA Chilosi et al., in their contribution entitled 'bcl-2 expression in pleural and extrapleural solitary fibrous tumours', recently published in the journal, 1 pointed out that among CD34-negative extrapleural mesenchymal tumours, a strong bcl-2 immunoreactivity, comparable to that shown by solitary fibrous tumours, was observed in four cases of synovial sarcoma.

Here we confirm this observation in a larger series of synovial sarcoma. bcl-2 overexpression was the only immunoreactivity consistently observed in 56 samples from 35 cases [five of which were confirmed by reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis] examined by a panel of antibodies directed against bcl-2 (diluted 1:20, a gift from Dr Mason), p53 (diluted 1:100, Novocastra), mdm2 (diluted 1:200, Ylem), p21/waf1 (diluted 1:400, Santa Cruz) and cdk4 gene products (diluted 1:400, Santa Cruz), in addition to CD34 (diluted 1:500, Novocastra). Glycodelin is a 28 kDa glycoprotein of the lipocalin family that was previously considered to be specific for the reproductive tract. Glycodelin is found in the secretory glandular epithelium of endometrium and in seminal vesicles. Given the cyclic differentiation of normal endometrial epithelium, w

Recent studies have shown bcl-2 to be regulated by p53. Other studies have suggested an inverse relationship between p53 and bcl-2 protein expression in breast and colonic cancers and in a variety of subtypes of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. This study investigates the relationship between bcl-2 and p53 p

## Background: Inhibition of apoptosis, or programmed cell death, may be critical both in the development of cancer and in determining response to therapy. the authors examined the expression of two related apoptotic inhibitors, bcl-2 and bcl-xl, in pretreatment biopsies from a series of 42 patient
