✦ Synopsis

I bought this book a while ago for self-study (before the reviews saying "not good for self-study") but my attempt quickly became frustrating. The lack of problems with solutions is the biggest limitation for me. It is very difficult to know if you are understanding the material correctly unless you can test your knowledge against some problems and see if you are able to come up with the correct answers. I contacted one of the authors directly about my issue with this. He was nice enough to reply, but I obviously did not get any solutions. I understand that they want instructors to be able to test progress but I think at least half of the solutions should be made freely available so that students can help themselves. Some of the notation was new to me so an appendix on notation would have saved me a lot of effort. For instance on page 19 a double-struck I 'II' is used in a way that I didn't understand. It took me a long time to figure out that 'II'[-0.5, 0.5] takes on 0 outside the given range and 1 inside the given range (if this is known to you maybe the notation will not be an issue for you)On the positive side I enjoyed the writing style of the authors and I felt that they did a good job of describing the intuition behind the math. I was able to get through a bit of the material and learn some of the concepts but in the end I felt like the book did not give me the tools I needed to learn most of the ideas presented.
