โฆ Synopsis
Selected treatments of choice are still pertinent in this volume; however, since the treatment of cancer is an expanding science seeking improved cure rates, some of the chemotherapeutic modalities that are becoming popular today are not detailed. Cancer treatment specialists could find sections on treatment of certain diseases lacking in the context, for example, of combined treatment modalities and multiple drug regimens. The dosage of drugs and the mechanics of administration of chemotherapeutics in diseases such as leukemia, for instance, is lacking, although the material is excellent as an introductory presentation. Survey of the most recent advances in immunology, including analysis of lymphocyte markers, particularly as they impact upon diagnosis and treatment of lymphoma, is absent.
Areas of continuing utility in this book-along with the fact that the volume is comprehensive, covering all organs and organ systems-are the first few chapters, which present a solid background in oncology, including fundamental research in cancer (Michael B. Shimkin) and chemotherapy (Montague Lane). The review of research on the etiology of cancer includes chemicaland viral-related causes. Subjects covered in the chemotherapy introduction include cellular kinetics, drug resistance, and a pertinent review of pharmacology.
No separate section exists for the head and neck tumors, but chapters on sarcomas of soft tissues, the respiratory system, the upper digestive tract, including the nasal and oral cavities, sinuses, and jaws, and the pharynx, larynx, and thyroid are all encompassing.
There are 805 figures and drawings in the book. These are detailed, excellent, and present pertinent information on anatomy, clinical examination, roentgenology, and tissue pathology. The text of the book is selectively referenced in a fashion that is useful to the reader.
