โœฆ Synopsis

Biocatalysis -transformations in the making

An extensive review of the biocatalysis (speciality enzyme) market. In 2000, the merchant enzymes industry had sales of about $1.8 bn (growing at about 14%/y) and industrial enzymes sales were about $1.5 bn, of which enzymes for fine chemical/pharmaceutical applications were $120-150 M (growing at about 9%/y). Major players in the industrial enzymes market include: Novozymes, Genencor, and DSM. Major players in the speciality enzymes market include: Diversa, Maxygen, and MediChem. There are data on applications of biocatalysts, including: bio-based polyesters (DuPont, 1,3propanediol feedstock), polylactic acid (Dow/Cargill), and foodstuff/ pharmaceutical applications (fructose, aspartame, semi-synthetic penicillins).
