catalysts. Under the deal, Sasol will set up the Sasol Technology Research Laboratory worth EUR 2.5 M at St Andrews. The facility will be inaugurated in mid-2002 and will employ an estimated 25 employees in the next four years. A team at St Andrews has already initiated research on the biosynthesis of naturally occurring organofluorine compounds by looking for the first known fluorinase enzyme. The discovery could open up various possibilities in medicinal chemistry and biochemistry. Speciality Chemicals, May 2002, 22 (4), 8

Stepping on the gas: Shell's GTL technology Shell's proprietary GTL technology is about to make a big impact on the world stage. After a quarter of a century of development, this chemical process is making the exploitation of remote natural gas reserves commercially viable through conversion to high quality, environment-friendly chemicals and oil products. The company is expected to announce the location of a new world-scale GTL plant at the end of 2002. It will probably use the Shell Middle Distillates Synthesis (SMDS) technology successfully commercialised at the Bintulu, Malaysia jv plant, but will have an output of six times Bintulu's 70,000 barrel/d.
