✦ Synopsis

Multiple insertion of ethylene into the TiCH~3~ bond, the first direct evidence for the role of cationic intermediates in polymerization reactions, is observed upon reaction of the cationic Ti and Zr complexes 3 at low temperatures. Complexes 3 are formed from 1 and 2 in a reaction involving elimination of methane. Under the same conditions, ethylene in excess undergoes polymerization (M = Ti, Zr).
