β¦ Synopsis
The results of studies concerning the base catalyzed polymerization of 3-butenamide, 4pentenamide, and 5-hexenamide are reported.
The results confirm that the anionic polymerization of 3-butenamide gives poly(2-methyl-~-alanine) through isomerization of allyl goup and proton transfer from amide group as already reported by Nakayama et aL
The anionic polymerization of 4-pentenamide occurs in the presence of DMSO and gives poly(2ethyl-13-alanine) through isomerization of 4-pentenamide to ~-ethylacrylamide (or its unstable intermediate) and subsequent hydrogen shift polymerization.
The isomerization of 4-pentenamide is independent of proton transfer reaction from amide ~oup. 5-Hexenamide, under the same conditions as for 4-pentenamide, does not polymerize.
