Patients with cirrhosis present a number of hormonal and metabolic alterations. Glucose intolerance, hyperinsulinemia and insulin resistance (1, 2), elevated free fatty acids (FFA) and glycerol plasma levels (3), increased circulating levels of glucagon (4), catecholamines (5) and other counter-regulatory hormones (1) are all characteristic features of patients with cirrhosis.
