✦ Synopsis

wide problems of eutrophication, acidification and toxic pollution of lakes are in the limelight of the first two chapters introduced with short comments by prominent scientists. Case studies of the complex interactions in the lake ecosystems of four continents are dealt with in the next chapter. The predominance of examples from American and European lakes indicates a lack of knowledge and of long-term data about the state of lakes in Africa. But Lake Victoria-the only example from Africa-represents the comprehensive problems of lakes in developing countries with respect to fishing, pollution and climatic factors. Many details of Lake Balaton were discussed in the complex "management of shallow waters".

Lake management includes all measures within and outside a water body influencing the environmental attributes of lakes and their control. Some investigations have shown that the processes of eutrophication and acidification are reversible, but the response to measurements is not expected to come immediately. The current lake management is often only a "management by crisis" (DIOSI). Beside the scientific aspect of the global water quality problems a new thinking in the social, economic and political fields is absolutely necessary. The forming of "international environmental consciousness" (DOWDESWELL & ADAMKUS) is also a task of scientists. A succesful cooperation between industrially developed countries in lake conservation and their mechanisms is shown in the case of the Laurentian Great Lakes.

Most figures, tables, the comprehensive bibliography and the subject index are valuable for the users, although some figures are difficult to recognize because of printing quality. The book is recommendable to limnologists and specialists of water management and water protection.
