โœฆ Synopsis

A method for analysing the stability of cylindrical loops and arcades to ballooning modes is presented. Using a WKB method, simple tests for instability (or stability to localised modes) are obtained for the two commonly used, line tying, conditions. In addition, when instabilities are present, the physical growth rate and the radial structure of the least stable can be computed from the solution of a 4th order system of ordinary differential equations. The detailed analysis for a particular field is presented in an Appendix.

The conditions required for the stability of a steady-state electron beam propagating in the solar corona are determined using the quasi-linear theory. The growth rate for electron plasma waves in a magnetized plasma is evaluated, with the electron distribution function being given by an analytic so

The longitudinal waves (Bernstein modes and plasma waves near the hybrid frequency) in a mixture of equilibrium coronal plasma and a small group of energetic electrons are investigated. The energetic electrons have a nonequilibrium momentum distribution inherent in trapped particles. The frequency d

The results of investigation of the cyclotron wave instability in the corona for Bernstein modes and plasma waves in a hybrid band have been used to interpret zebra-pattern phenomena. Two models of the generation region of parallel drifting bands are considered: the model of the point source localiz
