A finals de la dècada de 1920, els Masdéu viuen acomodats en la dictadura de Primo de Rivera. Són catalanistes moderats, amb un negoci de transport entre el port i les fàbriques del Poblenou. Barcelona bull d’activitat. En Joan Masdéu té el somni de ser mariner militar. Com tants joves del moment, sent l’atracció per la modernitat, pel jazz, per l’entrenament físic, pels uniformes, pels grans líders i les solucions dràstiques. També passa moltes hores amb els amics, ballant els moderns balls de moda als EUA, amb el gramòfon del seu pare. Té el cap ple de somnis, però no controla el seu destí. Quan esclata la guerra, s’enfronta amb els anarquistes.
