โœฆ Synopsis

An investigation is made into the net flow rate and fluid viscosity influence on backmixing in multistage, baffled and unbatlled, mixer columns.

Results are correlated with reference to both interstage backflow rate and intrastage backflow rate, the latter being a new fluid-dynamic parameter introduced in this paper.

Consideration is also given to the problem of determining a limit of the reliability of the model of a cascade of ideal tanks with backmixing.

The equations describing solvent extraction equipment with differential backmixing have been applied to distillation columns. The results can be interpreted in terms of this type of backmixing but the existing correlations for the liquid phase Peclet numbers must be increased by a factor of eight.
