✦ Synopsis
The TORE SUPRA magnet system is made of 18 modules forming a self supporting toroidal structure. Facing the magnet internal shield is the plasma tokamak chamber whose temperature can reach 550 K during plasma experiments. Any interruption in magnet refrigeration leads to a fast warm-up of the shield. The increase in shield temperature must be limited to 40 K, in order to keep the stresses due to differential contractions below the tensile yield strength. To maintain shield cooling the control system rapidly enters a stand-by operating mode during any fault condition. This paper reports the status of these safety systems after 45000 h of operation.
