1974, une bande de révolutionnaires se faisant appeler "la Brigade Dread Scott", organise un braquage dans une banque de Boston. De l'argent est volé et une vie est prise. Celle d'Emily Gordon, une cliente abattue pendant l'opération. Personne n'a vu qui était le tireur et les caméras de sécurité ne seront d'aucune utilité. Les braqueurs vont jusqu'à envoyer une lettre dans laquelle, fièrement, ils revendiquent la responsabilité du hold-up. Trente ans plus tard, ils restent impunis. 2004, une jeune actrice, Daryl Gordon, la fille d'Emily, assassinée trente ans plus tôt, a décidé d'en savoir plus sur la mort de sa mère. Elle sollicite les services de Spenser. Mais l'affaire est ancienne et le manque d'indices ainsi que la mystérieuse disparition d'un rapport du FBI n'arrangent rien.
